The importance of heat sinks in LED systems
The operation of an LED Lighting system is intrinsically linked to the operating temperature. An LED device is never 100% efficient: approximately half of its power is wasted in the form of heat, resulting in an efficiency of around 40 or 50%.
A poorly managed temperature of the LED lighting system is often the first cause of failures and malfunctions: although the limit is generally high, excessive heat can cause a deterioration in brightness, a change in color or a reduced lifetime of the individual LED chips.
Usually made of aluminum, the LED heat sink is an important device for regulating the temperature of LED components within tolerable limits, in order to avoid overheating which could cause various types of damage.
